Disney Live Action Remakes of Animated Classics: We Want Your Thoughts!

IMG_0370By Andy Herndon

The number one question I get at theDcast.com is questions regarding my take on the Disney live action remakes of animated classics. I wrote somewhat about this in the past, specifically regarding Maleficent. But since us Disney fans, including myself, are very passionate about this and it seems to be a trend as of late, I think it merits being talked about some more.

To review or for those of you who do not know, Disney is currently on a kick were they are taking  their animated classics and producing live action versions of those films. The first time they ever attempted this was the live action remake of 101 Dalmatians in 1996 with Glenn Close. In 2002 there was a sequel to this called 102 Dalmatians, that I don’t even remember hitting theaters . Both films had lack luster reviews but did okay at the box office.

Then in 2010 Disney gave us the Johnny Depp/Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland remake. Again, lackluster critical acclaim, but the movie make over a billion dollars world wide and we can expect to see a sequel soon.

Then of coarse there was Angelina Jolies Maleficent last year, which like the others, had somewhat lack luster reviews (though I really enjoyed it, see my review)  but did well at the box office. Maybe there is a pattern here. But wait! This years live action Cinderella had bother critical acclaim and great numbers at the box office.

So all that begs the question: What’s the deal Disney? They must like this pattern because we know we have The Jungle Book, an Alice in Wonderland sequel, Beauty and the Beast and a Dumbo live action remakes all announced and confirmed by Disney.

This author has a hard time forming an opinion about this, at least lately.

On one hand, these stories are classic and dear to me and my childhood. On the other hand, I would love to see new takes on these stories.  Opinions are strong. People either love or absolutely hate the idea.

All I want to do here today is get more of your thoughts on the subject. This is a trend that is not going away soon, so surly I will be writing about it a lot on the future.

What are your thoughts on Disney live action remakes of animated classics? Good? Bad? Don’t care?

Which one has been your favorite or most loathed thus far?

Which future remake are you most looking forward to and which one are you dreading the most?

What animated classic would you like to see done that hasn’t been announced?

This trend isn’t going away and Disney fans are passionate people. As such, I would love to hear your thoughts here, on Twitter, Facebook or Reddit.
