Maleficent 2?

By Andy Herndon

The Wrap reported late Monday that Disney is working on a Maleficent sequel! This leaves Disney fans everywhere asking: why?

It is true that Maleficent was hot at the box office, pulling in $760 million worldwide , but it was loathed by the critics and Disney purists alike.

According to The Wrap, Linda Woolverton, screenwriter of the first movie, is supposedly in talks with Disney about writing the second screenplay. Though Maleficent director Robert Stromberg is not expected to return for a sequel. There has been no indication from Angelina Jolie as to whether or not she would return as the dark fairy.

Honestly, I did enjoy the first movie, but I believe there just really isn’t anywhere else you can go with it. Most Disney purists disliked the first film as it changed Disney cannon from the original Sleeping Beauty. Yet, as Disney live action seems to be in a slump with anything original (see John Carter, The Lone Ranger and Tomorrowland) and non sports related (see Million Dollar Arm and McFarland USA) heading to flopsville, it makes sense from a business standpoint for Disney to milk this franchise for all it’s worth.

It should be noted that this is still rumor and that Disney, Woolverton or Jolie have not confirmed the story. Though seeing as how Disney is currently in a live action slump, it seems as if it is only a matter of time before Disney visits the Moors once again.

What do you think? Did you like the first Maleficent? Do you want a sequel? Why do you think original live action films from Disney are flopping at the box office as of late. Let us know in the comments or on Facebook or Twitter!

  1. SO you honestly enjoyed the first one, it made 760 million, but critics panned it.. and I’m confused.. You LIKED it but it still matters to you that critics didn’t?

    • It wasn’t bad in my opinion. I don’t think we need a second… As far as the critics go, I’m just stating the facts. 🙂

      • Sorry if this comes off as harsh, but what are you if not a critic? What do these other “critics” who panned the Maleficent know about movies that you don’t? Why did you wait until the fourth paragraph to say that you liked it? You liked it. Audiences liked it to the tune of 3/4 of a billion dollars. Who gives a hoot about the so-called critics and Disney purists (whatever that means)? I agree, a sequel is probably unnecessary, but even if it makes half of what the first one did, it’s not surprising to figure out why they’re doing one. I mean how many movies starring badass women make this much bank at the box office? To be honest, I haven’t seen more than bits and pieces of it, but my niece has, and she would probably enjoy another go around. But what does she know, she’s neither a critic or a purist.

      • Being from older generation, I enjoyd the different story line, Why not a sequel, what would it hurt? So Hollywood critics didn’t care for the Maleficent, many millions did. Isn’t that what is important? Keeping open mind & different points of view? It would be great of Angelina would agree to the next adventure, but if the people behind the scenes of the 1st movie, with the upsale mind set and creativity…the next may not be an Academy Award winner…but if we the people see it & enjoy it multiple times, buy the DVD and recommend it to others isn’t the point?

    • jistě že chci, aby maleficent pokračoval, moc se mi líbil a chci poděkovat tomu kdo ho napsal.
