The Wrap reported late Monday that Disney is working on a Maleficent sequel! This leaves Disney fans everywhere asking: why?
It is true that Maleficent was hot at the box office, pulling in $760 million worldwide , but it was loathed by the critics and Disney purists alike.
According to The Wrap, Linda Woolverton, screenwriter of the first movie, is supposedly in talks with Disney about writing the second screenplay. Though Maleficent director Robert Stromberg is not expected to return for a sequel. There has been no indication from Angelina Jolie as to whether or not she would return as the dark fairy.
Honestly, I did enjoy the first movie, but I believe there just really isn’t anywhere else you can go with it. Most Disney purists disliked the first film as it changed Disney cannon from the original Sleeping Beauty. Yet, as Disney live action seems to be in a slump with anything original (see John Carter, The Lone Ranger and Tomorrowland) and non sports related (see Million Dollar Arm and McFarland USA) heading to flopsville, it makes sense from a business standpoint for Disney to milk this franchise for all it’s worth.
It should be noted that this is still rumor and that Disney, Woolverton or Jolie have not confirmed the story. Though seeing as how Disney is currently in a live action slump, it seems as if it is only a matter of time before Disney visits the Moors once again.
What do you think? Did you like the first Maleficent? Do you want a sequel? Why do you think original live action films from Disney are flopping at the box office as of late. Let us know in the comments or on Facebook or Twitter!
