Studio Ghibli’s Top 5 Films #3
Welcome back to my top 5 favorite Studio Ghili films! If you have not read our other posts please go here for number 5 and here for number 4. We have really enjoyed doing these. There already has been some controversy with my selections, which makes me happy to know there are other passionate Studio Ghibli fans out there. My choice for this may surprise a few of you. People often have this as their number 1 and I’ve been told a couple times it better be in this list or there’ll be trouble.
“Princess Mononoke” directed by Hayao Miyazaki is a masterpiece on every level. It is by far the darkest and most violent of all the Studio Ghibli films, but that by no means is what makes it a masterpiece. This is the first Studio Ghibli film I had seen and for most of my life I had this in my number 1 spot. I think children have changed me and I appreciate a different type of magic now.
At first glance people can see this film as Industrialism vs Nature which would not be wrong but this story is told from a neutral perspective. There are no bad guys and good guys. There are different groups with different interests and they each have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Neutrality is represented in a physical form called the forest spirit. The industrialists want to kill the forest spirit and the animal spirits are upset it does nothing to protect them.
The score and animation are as beautiful as they are haunting. This film really explores the darkness of the world while still having the time for love, beauty and the totality of everything. With an eclectic voice cast of Bill Crudup, Billy Bob Thornton, Minni Driver, John Dimaggio, Claire Danes, Jada Pinkett Smith and Gillian Anderson “Princess Mononoke” is a must watch for film lovers.
Please tell us what you think of this movie or what you would have had in the number 3 spot. As always if you haven’t seen this movie stop doing what you are doing and download, borrow or buy this film and watch it immediately!
