Dale’s Disneyland Trip
It is August 5th and I have just returned home from a 12 day road trip with my family. We had a great time on the road and at Disneyland. I got to see a lot of the states I had never seen before and meet people I would have no other opportunity to. That all being said I wouldn’t recommend this road trip unless you really want to take your time getting to Disneyland. I have a 4 and a 9 year old and they were great in the car but I would have rather used those extra days to have rest days in between Disneyland days.
We had 1 big rule with the boys. We are going to go on every ride. Some are scary but all are fun and you just have to trust us. The boys agreed and were so brave. After every ride Jude (4) was like “Dad I was brave and I loved that ride”! He went on Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Tower of Terror, Matterhorn Bobsled and The Haunted Mansion and he was happy after every one.
There were some rides I knew I loved but The Finding Nemo ride really surprised me in how much I enjoyed it. It’s quite a long ride and it’s exciting. Also you never fully go under water so there is nothing to be afraid of if you are anxious about that type of thing.
Anyone who is thinking about going should really do 2 things for food. A character breakfast at the Plaza Inn is just fantasmic! You get to meet so many characters. I got in an argument with Hook and he pushed me. The food was perfect and it set us off for a really great day in the park. I also would recommend the Princess Lunch at Ariels Grotto in California Adventure. The food was really good and you can get an adult drink. The princesses also come right to your table and chat which was perfect for kids and much better than waiting in lines outside.
Told him Peter Pan was behind him…He didn’t appreciate it.
Ariel’s Grotto: We got to meet Ariel, Cinderella, Belle, Tiana and Rapunzel all in one place. Jude was very shy but Princess Tiana really made an effort to open him up.
Plaza Inn: Jude was very excited to meet Minnie. She gave him a kiss and she blushed at my Mickey Mouse impression.
We also went to the Jedi Training Academy which was really cool but make sure to set the expectations for your kids very low. They probably won’t get picked we had to wait twice and only Dash got picked the second time. Jude was sad but excited for his brother. If they are chosen they will get to fight Darth Vader. Dash was originally tempted by the dark side and was going to bow to Vader but changed his mind when faced with him.
Dash ducked under Darth Vader’s lightsaber. It’s a proud moment.
We went on almost every ride in both parks and went a few times on things like Space Mountain and Star Tours. It really is easy to do it if you make sure to get your fast passes. You will have a much better experience if you plan out your fast passes and you stay aware of when you can get more.
People often want to know what I think is better Disneyland or Disney World. I like them the same but for different reasons. The biggest difference I noticed this trip was that the Cast Members were very inconsistent and at the rides were rarely in character. At Disney World people were very committed to their roles and our experience. For example in Disneyland I went to The Enchanted Tiki Room twice. The first time the Cast Member was great told us a bit about the attraction and interacted with the host bird to wake him up. The second time a different Cast Member just said hi welcome and enjoy and started the show. It by no means ruined our trip or anything it was just a difference I noticed and it points more to the parks leadership team than anything else really.
Now if rides aren’t your thing but you love the Disney experience there are a lot of cool things you can only get in Disney.
Pins, Vinylmations and toys!
Oh Boy! There sure are a lot of ways to spend money and never feel bad about it. Pin trading is a lot of fun. You can find some really great pins and it’s fun trying to track down ones you want that are cast member exclusives. The boys really loved Vinylmations most are very well done.
You can also check out different shows. We saw two; Aladdin and Mickey’s Magical Map. If you are going for a few days they are really great ways to sit and rest while enjoying high quality production entertainment. Aladdin especially was top notch and should not be missed at all! All four of us loved it. It’s 45 mins, in a beautiful theatre and the genie had the whole audience in the palm of his hand
This was a great trip we grew as a family and had the best time. I got to hang with Andy in person twice and now I owe him a Starbucks. We will be talking more about this trip on Episode 37 of The D-Cast when I will start my co-hosting duties. Check us out on Monday August 10th! Don’t forget to comment below and tell us about your trip to Disneyland or World.
